We're looking for an Electrical Trade Assistant to join our team at RNZAF Base Ohakea.

This is a hands-on role supporting our Electrical and HVAC teams across a diverse range of facilities, infrastructure and building services. Working alongside experienced tradespeople, you'll gain exposure to a wide variety of maintenance activities while contributing to the reliable operation of a critical Defence site.

About the role

As an Electrical Trade Assistant, you'll support the delivery of planned and reactive maintenance across electrical and HVAC systems throughout RNZAF Base Ohakea.

You'll work alongside qualified tradespeople assisting with inspections, preventative maintenance, repairs, plant room activities and general operational support. You'll also help ensure maintenance activities are accurately recorded and completed to a high standard.

This is a varied role where no two days are quite the same. You'll have the opportunity to work across a broad range of facilities and infrastructure while developing practical skills and industry knowledge.

What you'll be responsible for

  • Assisting Electrical and HVAC technicians with planned and reactive maintenance
  • Supporting preventative maintenance programmes across site infrastructure
  • Assisting with inspections, testing and maintenance activities
  • Supporting plant room housekeeping and equipment upkeep
  • Maintaining tools, equipment, vehicles and work areas
  • Recording maintenance activities using our job management system
  • Identifying and reporting maintenance issues and defects
  • Supporting safe work practices and compliance requirements
  • Building positive relationships with customers and site occupants
  • Providing general operational support to the wider trades team

What we're looking for

  • Experience in a trades assistant, maintenance, labouring or operational support role, or a genuine interest in developing a career in the trades
  • A practical mindset and willingness to learn
  • Good communication and customer service skills
  • Ability to undertake physical work safely and effectively
  • Competent using mobile devices and technology
  • A positive attitude and strong work ethic with a desire to learn and develop your skills 
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality
  • Full New Zealand Driver Licence
  • Ability to obtain and maintain NZDF security clearance

Previous experience in facilities maintenance, electrical, HVAC or building services environments will be advantageous but is not essential.
