For over 30 years, PAE has partnered with the New Zealand Defence Force, delivering facilities management services that keep critical environments working and moving. It’s a relationship we’re incredibly proud of because it reflects the trust placed in us to deliver, every single day.
As a proudly iwi-owned organisation, we recognise our role as kaitiaki guardians of the environments and communities we support and we are committed to building strong, respectful partnerships grounded in manaakitanga.
We are now looking for an Environmental and Heritage Advisor to join our Defence team, supporting environmental compliance, sustainability initiatives, and heritage stewardship across RNZAF Base Ohakea.
This is a diverse and meaningful role where no two days are quite the same. One day you may be supporting resource consent compliance or environmental investigations, and the next you could be working alongside operational teams, consultants, iwi or NZDF stakeholders to help protect culturally and historically significant sites.
About the role
This role provides specialist environmental and heritage advice across a complex operational environment, helping ensure our sites operate responsibly, sustainably and in line with legislative and contractual obligations.
You’ll work closely with operational teams, project managers, engineers and external stakeholders to identify environmental risks, improve environmental performance, and support the long-term stewardship of NZDF land, water and built assets.
What you’ll be responsible for
- Supporting environmental compliance across NZDF camps and bases
- Monitoring consent conditions, environmental obligations and reporting requirements
- Maintaining environmental registers and data within MRI, Risk Manager and related systems
- Supporting environmental audits, investigations and corrective actions
- Assisting with sustainability and carbon reduction initiatives
- Providing environmental advice to operational and project teams
- Supporting the protection and management of heritage buildings and culturally significant sites
- Building positive working relationships with iwi, consultants, regulators and NZDF stakeholders
- Promoting awareness of environmental and cultural responsibilities across the business
What we’re looking for
- A tertiary qualification in Environmental Science, Resource Management, Engineering or a related discipline
- Experience in environmental management, compliance or sustainability within infrastructure, construction, facilities management or similar industries
- Sound understanding of environmental legislation and regulatory frameworks
- Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities across multiple sites
- Confidence engaging with operational teams, contractors, regulators and iwi stakeholders
- A practical, solutions-focused approach with a continuous improvement mindset
- Experience working with environmental management systems or registers will be highly regarded
- The ability to pass Defence Clearance
Why this role
- A genuinely varied role combining environmental, operational and heritage responsibilities
- The opportunity to contribute to sustainability and stewardship outcomes across critical Defence environments
- A role with visible impact where your advice and expertise will influence real-world outcomes
- The chance to work within a collaborative team that values practical thinking and continuous improvement
- A business that supports strong relationships, autonomy and getting the job done properly
