Maintenance Operations Trade Assistant
Are you practical, hands-on, and always ready to roll up your sleeves? Do you take pride in keeping things running smoothly and solving maintenance issues as they arise? We are looking for a Maintenance Operations Assistant to join our team at Defence House in Wellington.
This is a great opportunity for someone with a broad range of practical skills who enjoys variety in their day and takes a proactive approach to maintenance and customer service.
About the Role
As a Maintenance Operations Assistant, you’ll be responsible for a mix of planned maintenance, minor repairs, and general facility support at NZDF’s Wellington Head Office. From setting up function spaces to fixing office furnishings and assisting with contractor coordination, this role is all about keeping the workplace functional and efficient.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Carrying out routine maintenance and minor repairs, such as fixing fittings, painting, replacing lightbulbs, and assisting with office furniture repairs.
- Assisting with the setup of meeting rooms, events, and function spaces to ensure everything is in place and ready to go.
- Supporting the Operations Controller in coordinating maintenance work and liaising with contractors.
- Conducting site checks and audits to ensure equipment and facilities remain in good working order.
- Helping with the delivery of supplies, general tidying, and maintaining a well-organised workspace.
- Ensuring Health & Safety procedures are followed at all times.

- Hands on and practical – experience in a trade, maintenance of facilities support role
- A problem solver – able to assess and resolve maintenance issues efficiently
- Well organised – able to juggle multiple tasks and prioritise as required
- Customer friendly – approachable and professional when working with colleagues and clients
- Tech savvy – able to navigate job management systems and other online tools
- Flexible and adaptable – willing to pitch in wherever needed and take on a variety of tasks
- Physically fit – there will be some heavy lifting
- Security conscious – able to obtain and retain NZDF security clearance
